packages.
Research
- Studying for my PhD, I have greatly developed my abilities in problem
solving, academic research and technical writing.
- I have illustrated my ability to work independently and motivate myself
for an extended project.
- Principal areas of research are topological degree computation,
equation solving,
interval arithmetic
and computer algebra, for which
I have written numerous software packages.
|
Teaching
- I have 3½ years' experience of teaching first-year
undergraduates computational theory, programming, number theory,
group theory and information technology, and second-year undergraduates
linear algebra.
- I have prepared and delivered hundreds of tutorials to students, which
has been invaluable in developing my communication and leadership skills.
- Assisting students in a laboratory environment, I have taught C, UNIX,
Lisp and ML, and have improved my inter-personal skills.
|
Other
- Achieved a Gold Award in the National Mathematics Contest of 1990 and
qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad.
- Chosen as my school's representative in a series of Mathematics
Masterclasses at the Royal Institution,
London.
- Basic knowledge of French, improving German, exchange visits to
Sarlat, France
and Bad Wildungen, Germany.
- Vacation work experience includes supermarket jobs, cleaning and fruit

- Roleplaying: I regularly run and participate in gaming sessions with
friends, which is a fun and enjoyable way to develop teamwork and
group communication skills. I created and maintain the
Durenmar: arx peritae
web site, which is the world's most comprehensive site of
resources for the Ars Magica
roleplaying system.
- Paragliding:
Paragliding
is the simplest form of free flight. I
have a BHPA Elementary Pilot rating. I
am also the Secretary and a founder member of the University of Bath's
Paragliding Club. I am responsible
for organising regular flying trips for members.
- Ballroom Dancing: I have Modern Ballroom and Latin American
ISTD Bronze ratings.
- I am also interested in multigym training, swimming, strategy games,
fantasy literature, ancient history and politics.
