Computing

  • Programming: 5 years' experience with C/C++. Skilled with Fortran, Lisp and Gofer, working knowledge of Modula 2, BASIC, ML, Orwell.
  • Computer Algebra: Skilled with Reduce, basic familiarity with Maple and Axiom.
  • Web Authoring: Detailed experience with HTML, working knowledge of Java.
  • Operating Systems: Experienced user of UNIX, DOS, Win 3.1/95.
  • Other: Experience with various word-processing and spreadsheet packages.

Research

  • Studying for my PhD, I have greatly developed my abilities in problem solving, academic research and technical writing.
  • I have illustrated my ability to work independently and motivate myself for an extended project.
  • Principal areas of research are topological degree computation, equation solving, interval arithmetic and computer algebra, for which I have written numerous software packages.

Teaching

  • I have 3½ years' experience of teaching first-year undergraduates computational theory, programming, number theory, group theory and information technology, and second-year undergraduates linear algebra.
  • I have prepared and delivered hundreds of tutorials to students, which has been invaluable in developing my communication and leadership skills.
  • Assisting students in a laboratory environment, I have taught C, UNIX, Lisp and ML, and have improved my inter-personal skills.

Other

  • Achieved a Gold Award in the National Mathematics Contest of 1990 and qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad.
  • Chosen as my school's representative in a series of Mathematics Masterclasses at the Royal Institution, London.
  • Basic knowledge of French, improving German, exchange visits to Sarlat, France and Bad Wildungen, Germany.

Interests

  • Roleplaying: I regularly run and participate in gaming sessions with friends, which is a fun and enjoyable way to develop teamwork and group communication skills. I created and maintain the Durenmar: arx peritae web site, which is the world's most comprehensive site of resources for the Ars Magica roleplaying system.

  • Paragliding: Paragliding is the simplest form of free flight. I have a BHPA Elementary Pilot rating. I am also the Secretary and a founder member of the University of Bath's Paragliding Club. I am responsible for organising regular flying trips for members.

  • Ballroom Dancing: I have Modern Ballroom and Latin American ISTD Bronze ratings.

  • I am also interested in multigym training, swimming, strategy games, fantasy literature, ancient history and politics.
