Jean-Pierre was a saintly old friar that lived in the small chapel on Santare Hill, attending to the religious needs of the covenfolk of Malinbois. When the Covenant was founded way back in 1197 AD, he decided to help them set up and they paid for the construction of the chapel. He was a member of the Austin Friars. In the past he had brought forth the power of God to perform a Miracle on four occasions, giving him his saintly reputation. At the time of his death, he was not nearly as sprightly as he was in his youth, but until recently God had smiled upon him and he was well-preserved for his age. The story of Jean-Pierre's passing away is entitled Three Score Years and Ten, the exact length of his life.

Appearance

He is not very tall and is rather scrawny. He is slightly bent over and walks with the aid of a stick. His honest and open face is quite wrinkled. He has medium length wispy white hair and no beard. He has bright green eyes and his face is usually a picture of reverent calm. He wears the black robes of the Austin Friars, but his are rather ragged - overall he is rather unkempt. His humble appearance is completed with the simple bone crucifix tied around his neck with a bit of old thread.

Origins

An orphan, he was brought up in a monastery in the Val du Seraque. His dedication and natural virtuosity earned him training in the religous dogma. However he considered it more important to spread the word of God rather than to rise to personal power within the hierarchy of the Church. So after taking his vows of poverty (which he takes very seriously) he travelled around to help the needy. After several years of wandering he felt that it was God's intention that he should settle down and take care of his own congregation. So he accepted the offer of the group of strange scholars he found rebuilding an old fort on Santare Hill. The Magi were not a bad bunch, he decided, despite the peculiar gifts which God had chosen to grant them.

Notes

The small chapel and valetudinarium are dedicated to Raphael, Patron Saint of healers. When he is not giving sermon, Jean-Pierre spends most of his time caring for and comforting the sick.

He carries the bone crucifix of Saint Martin, an item with 1 Faith Point. He has quite a reputation amongst the covenfolk as a result of the Miracles he has performed. In particular, he has successfully cured blindness twice. Many of the assorted residents of Malinbois attend his inspirational sermons, but of the Magi, only Marcus comes regularly. In fact Jean-Pierre regularly enjoys lengthy philosophical discussions with him.

He has been on a couple of expeditions which have involved contact with minions of the Infernal. His faith in God successfully guided him and he was able to help banish the Demons that he encountered. Although it was a close thing when the Dark Magus Damon le Mont cast Weakening of the Heart on him - he was going to follow up with Clenching Grasp of the Crushed Heart but fortunately he was slain by Braeble before he had a chance. Nevertheless, he had a weak heart for several years, and has suffered a minor coronary.

Jean-Pierre was a sympathiser with the Cathar cause in the Albigensian Crusade (which has occured recently) - as a result he was suffering from a Crisis of the Faith (since the Cathar Heresy contradicts the Word of God as spoken through the Pope), meaning that he could not draw upon his personal True Faith. This sympathy is a result of his disregard for material wealth - he believes that the Church should practice the humility which it preaches.

As of Spring 1230, Jean-Pierre's Crisis of the Faith is at an end. In what could best be described as an "outer body experience" or "visitation" he met the four Archangels in a dream (or was it real?) and his Faith was put to the test. God was pleased with him and granted him a wish. With typical humility, the friar only asked that he be granted good health so that he can best serve God. As a result, he lost his Decrepitude of +2 and his dodgy heart condition, and he gained back 2 Strength points lost through aging. Also, his True Faith score went up by 1 to +2.

During this recent experience, Jean-Pierre received some troubling news - he found out about the fact that the Magi were responsible for the slaughter of the 2000+ Crusaders in the mountains. For a long while he was deeply disturbed by this but decided he should stay and try and curb their excesses.

Over the last few years, the friar has been ageing noticably. He needs to use his walking stick again and his Decrepitude in now +5. Surely he is not much longer for this world...

Jean-Pierre's latest Miracle occured in Spring 1234 in the city of Arles. His most dramatic yet, an Angel came down from the heavens to save him and his companions! There were many witnesses and his reputation as a holy man is spreading far and wide. The full story can be found in the Notable Events.
