Paul Belloc is the husband and familiar of Madeleine Torvus. By the use of rare knowledge, the Quaesitor forged a Scarlet Cord between the pair, binding them irrevocably together. Paul occupies an ambivalent position in the Covenant. He has the grogs as regular drinking partners, and in general they think of him as a great laugh and a good pal. However, when not in their cups they are a little wary - after all, Paul isn't your ordinary run-of-the-mill bodyguard. He doesn't fit in with the other familiars (them being animals) or with the apprentices, who he shares priveledges with. And then there's his wife...

Appearance

In many ways, Paul is the opposite of Madeleine, and his appearance is no exception. Paul is a huge man, towering over most people in the Covenant (he is nearly 2' taller than his wife!) and heavily built, with bulging muscles and a fine physique. He has sandy hair, a raffish broken nose and twinkling blue eyes. He is handsome, made more so by the naivity that he radiates - the typical dumb farmboy; ever young despite his middle years. Women seem to find him irresistable, and he has most of the young ladies in the Covenant mooning over him (Because he is in love with Madeleine, and married to her, nearly all women can be considered unsuitable, and so affected by his Curse of Venus - and to these women he has a Presence of +6!).

He is never tidy - his favourite tunic is stained and worn, his boots are scuffed and holed, and his hair is scruffy. He shaves infrequently, and washes even rarer; but he still pulls the ladies, and this infuriates some of the younger grogs.

Origins

Paul was born in Narbonne to a peasant family on the Archbishop's estate. He grew up to be an excellent labourer, given his strength and endurance. However, he was somewhat of a trouble-maker, arguing with his foreman and getting many of the serving girls into trouble. It was no suprise when he was conscripted to the church army when the Crusades were called. His regiments had little action though (Well it was the Fourth Crusade..), and he returned home, and basically became a layabout, occasionally working to fund his drinking and his fines for a variety of public order offences. The story of how he met Madeleine can be found under her description, but suffice it to say that he fell instantly in love with her the moment he saw her. Her use of magic to force him to pull himself into shape was not altogether necessary - if she had asked nicely, he would have done anything for her.

Paul is possibly the worst husband possible for a straight-laced Quaesitor l ike Madeleine. He drinks heavily, he lies, cheats and steals (although the latter is rare: the last thing he stole was a silver wedding ring for Madeleine - when she found out, she had him put in gaol for 3 years), he gets angry when she shouts at him - their quarrels are reknowned for their ferocity. However, they are totally besotted with each other, proving the axiom that opposites attract.

Although a rebel at heart, he secretly likes to be ordered around, so deliberately defies Madeleine just to infuriate her - the making up after these quarrels are so much fun!

He tries to stay faithful, but it is hard - he is very weak-willed; within a day of being in the Covenant he had bedded Lunantha, but then her reputation precedes her. It is also impossible for him to keep things secret from Madeleine due to the familial bonds - the Scarlet Cord joins their emotions.
