Aline, Cufel and Coll go back to Longwitton on the suggestion of Hygwald, who wants the grogs to steal some of the well-water again. Aline thanks them for the ham, and enjoys the feast whilst the men steal some of the water. Sure enough it contains a pawn of vis.
The Hunters' Contest: On the way back from Longwitton, Aline and her party enter the Valley of Mists and encounter its lady Cierella. She invites them to return for her yearly contest which will be held in two day's time. They return to Vidua Vasta to fetch Elaine and Lochlann to join in the fun. The night before the contest Cierella issues a number of orders, and then comes three times during the night to encourage the PCs to break those orders, which they do not do. In the morning they are taken to the contest area and given masks to wear, these transform their heads into those of animals: Lochlann (hedgehog), Coll (ox), Cufel (mouse), Bathild (horse), Aline (wolf), Elaine (squirrel). Rather than competing against the faeries, another team of humans join them instead. The other team announce the first contest, and Kestrel competes with Bathild over a display of sword skill, and wins (just). Elaine challenges Pike to get to the top of a tree first; he is a fast climber, but she uses Lord of the Trees to get herself picked up and deposited up top. Hare challenges Lochlann to a lifted contest, and manages to pick up the heaviest rock (the squirming and giggling rock troll puts him off). Aline pits herself against Deer in a joust; the latter uses magic against Aline to convince her not to use horses, but grogs. Aline still wins thanks to her enchanted shield. Lamb declares an archery contest; unfortunately Lochlann has already fought, and Coll predicatively loses with his short bow against Lamb's longbow.
Vis is awarded as prizes. Once the faeries have left, Deer rips off his mask and angrily approaches the PCs. He demands to know what covenant they are from, and warns them not to return here next year, since this is Burnham's vis source.

Ageing
Events:
The Conception: On the prompting of Natasha Gyongy, Lucas and Hygwald head down to the Selkirk Forest where Lise is about to enact a ritual to bring her plans to completion. She is clearly channelling some greater power using 9 crystal spheres. The ritual comes to a climax, and a wave of fertile energy washes over the spectators. Lise collapses, her full age of ninety years catching up with her. The brochs crumble to dust, and Lofanneth leaves her to fend for herself. Lying foetal in the glade is the naked body of Fr. Abelard, returned from his wolf-form. The PCs take him to Paddesham and leave him in the care of his friend, the blind Widow Malier. Only later do they realise they've left behind Lise's crystal spheres, and have no idea what happened to her either.
The council decides to rebuild the chapel in Paddesham using the gold found inside the shinty ball given to Coll. They give this money to Aethelbald for the purpose, but write a letter to Nicholas Giffard, stating that he has impressed upon them the need to restore the faith in Paddesham, and to this end they have rescued the former priest from the clutches of the pagan powers which had occupied the forest (he had been their prisoner for half a decade), and that their lord has agreed to finance the rebuilding of the chapel.
It is later discovered that Aline, Bathild, and Natasha are all pregnant, along with a score of other women in Paddesham, even those who have passed childbearing age (and Natasha has developed a longevity ritual). Aline visits Widow Malier in Paddesham and is no longer pregnant.
